The officers of the Barrett Township Police Department pride themselves on
effectively and efficiently enforcing the traffic laws of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania. Each officer routinely engages in traffic enforcement and
education as a part of their daily activities. Traffic enforcement and education is a very valuable facet of the overall safety of the Township. It is hoped that between special traffic enforcement details, routine traffic law enforcement, and public education, we can achieve a safer community for motorists using the roadways within the Township, as well as the general public. In addition to regular traffic enforcement, the Barrett Township Police Department utilizes trained and skilled officers to perform other traffic related tasks.
Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement
Patrolman Venneman has received special training to inspect Commercial Motor Vehicles and is responsible for the enforcement of State and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to their operation and required equipment while operating within Barrett Township.
Commercial Motor Vehicle enforcement is a necessary component of the overall safety of the motoring public. The goal of Commercial Motor Vehicle enforcement is the elimination of motor vehicle accidents involving Commercial Motor Vehicles through enforcement, education, and cooperative effort with area Motor Carriers.
Accident Reconstruction
Chief Williams utilizes his skills and expertise to investigate fatal accidents or other serious motor vehicle collisions. Having a certified Reconstructionist greatly reduces the Barrett Township Police Department's reliance on the Pennsylvania State Police to provide these highly technical services. |

DUI Enforcement While not performed by a special unit, enforcement of the Commonwealth's Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Controlled Substance laws is a vital part of the overall traffic safety vision. Over 75% of motor vehicle crashes after 6 pm are alcohol related, and over 17,000 people were killed last year as a result of an alcohol-related crash. It is for this reason that the Barrett Township Police Department runs an aggressive DUI enforcement program.
Officers are continually vigilant for the signs of impaired drivers among the
motoring public. In addition to looking for impaired drivers during the
normal course of their shift, some officers participate in a special program
hosted by the Pennsylvania State Police called "Operation Nighthawk".
This special, anti-DUI initiative consists of municipal police officers and
Pennsylvania State Troopers who attend a special two day seminar on DUI laws,
and perform
Patrolman Larry Raisner and Patrolman Brian Webbe each participated in Operation Nighthawk during May of 2004. Both Patrolman Raisner and Patrolman Webbe made arrests for DUI during the Operation.
